아흘람 시블리(1970- )는 팔레스타인의 사진가로, 이스라엘의 점령으로 인해 팔레스타인 사람들이 빼앗기고 배척당하는 상황을 탐구한다. 단순히 현실을 묘사하는 데 그치지 않고 땅, 집, 소속, 상실에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던진다. 이 물음은 각기 다른 이유로 집을 떠나야만 했던 세계 곳곳으로부터의 추방자, 난민, 이주노동자, 어린이, 성소수자 들에게로 확장해 나간다. 시블리는 이미지와 텍스트를 조합하고 여러 장의 사진을 시리즈로 엮어 하나의 서사를 만드는 독특한 방법을 취하는데, 특정 사회 현상을 첨예하게 파고들어 잃어버린 정체성과 땅의 이야기를 온전히 들려주려는 그만의 전략이다. 존 버거가 그를 두고 표현했던 것처럼 시블리는 언제나 숨은 자들의 편에 서 있는 ‘숨은 자들의 사진가’다.

이 책은 큐레이터이자 미술평론가인 아담 심치크의 작가론으로 시작해 사진가가 1997년부터 2017년까지 작업한 17개의 시리즈에서 선별한 사진 135점을 소개한다. 기획과 편집 과정에서 편집자와 작가가 한국과 팔레스타인을 오가며 긴 여정을 함께한 결과물로, 국영문판이 동시에 출간되었다.

Ahlam Shibli, born in 1970, is a Palestinian photographer who explores situations where Palestinians are denied their freedom and excluded from representation by the Israeli occupation. Instead of simply describing reality, she asks fundamental question about land, home, belonging, and loss. Her questioning extends to expellees, refugees, migrant workers, children, and sexual minorities from different parts of the world who are deprived of their homes for different reasons. Shibli combines images with text and connects several photographs to form cinematographic constellations. As John Berger has said about her, Shibli is a “photographer of the hidden” who always stands on the side of the hidden.

This book carries 135 photographs taken from 17 series of work spanning from 1997 to 2017. They are accompanied by artist’s statements introducing each series. Ahlam Shibli, in her later work, has attached extensive captions to each photograph which indicate circumstances, time, place, and the names of the persons depicted. Ahlam Shibli was born in 1970 in Palestine. Through a documentary aesthetics, her photographic work addresses the contradictory implications of the notion of home; it deals with the loss of home and the fight against that loss, but also with the restrictions and limitations that the idea of home imposes on individuals and communities marked by repressive identity politics. Adam Szymczyk was Artistic Director of documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel in 2017. He is Curator-at-Large at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1997, he co-founded the Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, to then work as Director of Kunsthalle Basel from 2003 to 2014. In 2008, he co-curated with Elena Filipovic the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art, When Things Cast No Shadow. He is a Member of the Board of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and Member of the Advisory Committee of Kontakt (The Art Collection of Erste Group and ERSTE Foundation) in Vienna, where he also holds a seminar Undoing Landscape as guest lecturer at Akademie der bildenden K?nste. In 2011, he received the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement at the Menil Foundation in Houston.
